Blood Pond ReviewThis story had SO much potential! I was really drawn to the drama of poor Bruce, on the run all these years from the horror of witnessing his young friend get murdered. It's unclear whether or not Bruce knew that he was being pursued, let alone that Tommy's big brother was the one following him; his own demons were chasing him just as hard as August.
The story starts up with some nice tension as we watch August track and eventually catch up with Bruce. The drama between them is believable and interesting. It's not really spoilers here - since this happens pretty early on - but Bruce agrees to go back to Blood Pond with August because another boy has been murdered. Bruce SAYS he doesn't remember what happened, that he didn't see the killer, but it's clear that the author is hiding things from us at this point. Rather than driving the tension, it comes off as a plot device.
And this is where the story starts to break down. Bruce and August have sex just days after meeting, and it just doesn't FEEL authentic. Their emotions are so all over the place, and the characters themselves are so troubled that it's very hard to understand or like or care about them. And there are a LOT of inconsistencies that eventually lead up to a kind of plot twist which I really didn't appreciate; it felt VERY forced and cliché and took the terrible drama of Bruce's experience and just made it...cheesy.
The story really went downhill at that point. The big climatic encounter ended up being...anticlimactic, instead just setting us up for a weird little follow-up scene. A happily-ever-after epilogue is glossed over and then...another dramatic plot twist to leave us hanging...which didn't make ANY sense at all.
Ultimately, I grew to not care about either Bruce or August. Bruce showed himself to be flakey and inconsistent and August was painfully two-dimensional. The two had nothing in common except dead Tommy, and there was no time for them to learn to love each other. Too rushed, too much and too little.
And the sex? Just...awkward. Quick, a little skeezy, and not sexy!
Blood Pond OverviewTen years ago, August's adolescent brother was brutally murdered, and dumped in Blood Pond. The one person he is sure can identify the killer is on the run.Bruce can't escape the horror of what he experienced the night his friend, Tommy, was slaughtered in front of his eyes. Although he survived, he is still on the run, running from shadows that he can't see. The last thing he wants is to come face to face with his greatest nightmare, face to face with the older brother of his dead boyhood crush. The person chasing Bruce is a face he once admired in a photograph, a man desperately seeking closure to his brother's murder. August has given up everything to find Bruce because he is sure that Bruce is the key to helping him find what he seeks. But can Bruce help August find the killer, or will the answer be buried forever at the bottom of Blood Pond?
