The Pub Across The Pond ReviewWhat does a usually unlucky girl do when she finally gets lucky? She leaves behind all she knows and travels to Ireland, of course! Carlene has lived the first thirty years of her life playing the role of perfect, dutiful daughter to her OCD-ridden father and nice, naive friend to those around her. Her luck's never been great...she lives with the belief that she contributed to her mother's death and carries around memories of a brief marriage that broke her heart. She surprises everyone, therefore, when she wins a pub in Ireland and leaves her Ohio home to become its proprietor. There, in the little town of Ballybeog, she meets an eclectic group of people who welcome her with an odd mixture of curiosity, warmth, resentment and pride. As she works to fit into the life of the little town, Carlene finds both friendship and enmity, each of which challenge her to grow personally and finally find the courage to stand up for herself. Dealing with unpredictable Irish personalities, a prankster vandal, and a man who confuses her with his constant wavering between passion and coldness bring Carlene to an ultimate realization: sometimes opening your heart and standing up for what's right means saying goodbye to things you cherish. And, sometimes, saying goodbye is just the first step to saying hello to something wonderful and new.

The author did a wonderful job of capturing the Irish spirit and of portraying her characters honestly. She perfectly displays their paradoxical open, friendly personalities with their fierce loyalty and pride. Humor is amply sprinkled throughout the book, especially in Carlene's internal dialogue, which I absolutely loved. However, the action tended to lag at certain points in the book, making me impatient to finally get to the end. There were also many times when I got very frustrated with Carlene and her continued naivety and inability to stand up for herself. I know that this just means that the book is realistic - how many of us really are like Carlene in that sense - but sometimes realism can be a bit annoying, too. In the end, however, the beautiful story and the truths that it underscores made the book a satisfying read.

As soon as she arrives in Ballybeog, Carlene is smitten not just by the town's beguiling mix of ancient and modern, but by the welcome she receives. In this small town near Galway Bay, strife is no stranger, strangers are family, and no one is ever too busy for a cup of tea or a pint. And though her new job presents challenges - from a meddling neighbour to the pub's colourful regulars - there are compensations galore. Like the freedom to sing, joke, and tell stories, and in doing so, find her own voice. And in her flirtation with Ronan McBride, the pub's charming, reckless former owner, she just may find the freedom to follow where impulse leads and trust her heart - and her luck - for the very first time...
