Mystery at Shadow Pond ReviewI read this book for the first time when I was in elementary school and it stayed with me so much that when I spotted it on the shelf at a used bookstore I had to buy it and read it again. Margie Lawson, her brother Neale and their parents live near Shadow Pond Park and they are suffering from financial difficulties. Their father must have some money to expand his business and the only way they can raise it is by selling some of their property, making it necessary that they also sell their beloved horse. This scenario is made worse by the fact that their Grampa had recently died, casting additional darkness on their situation. A ray of hope emerges when they learn that the letters that Grampa had received from deceased artist Jerome Elwell may be very valuable. Elwell had died young and a pauper and rose to fame only after his death. Little is known about his life, so the letters would make it possible to fill in some of the details.
Even though the Lawson's are certain that Grampa saved the letters, when they search, they cannot find them. Suspicion falls on Mr. Willey, a strange miser and hermit that regularly visited their Grampa when he was alive. Mr. Willey seems harmless, but he was spotted going into the house when no one was around.
The mystery deepens when Mr. and Mrs. Elwell, cousins of Jerome, appear and express an interest in the letters. While they are outwardly friendly, their actions contradict their claims, making them prime suspects in the mystery. In an attempt to better understand Mr. Willey, Margie is also reading the classic "Silas Marner", an action that puzzles her bibliophobe brother.
Mysteries written for young people generally cannot have too complex a plot, subtle clues must be avoided and complex interweaving of the characters will confuse the reader. In this case, the author has made the plot more complex than is usual in juvenile stories, but does it very well. My favorite aspect of the story is the reference to "Silas Marner"; it is a rare occasion when children receive this type of encouragement to read a classic story.
