The author uses lots of examples of lipid adaptations in wild animals, and covers everything from seasonal changes in the adipose tissue of reindeer, to the fatty acid composition of crayfish eye cell membranes. Brief, concise reviews of lipid synthesis, transport and oxidation are given, as well as a discussion of the diversity of fatty acids and their various origins, properties, and functions. A good portion of the text is devoted to understanding why lipids are so important, and how they function as storage molecules, membrane constituents, and cellular messengers. These functions are illustrated with examples of the roles of lipids in migration, hibernation, starvation, reproduction, the immune system, and human obesity.
