On the Duck Pond (Barnyard Buddies) ReviewQuack, quack! Many young children are interested in finding out all about ducks. Female ducks are called hens. When she builds a nest she lines it with down because "these small soft feathers keep her eggs warm when she leaves her nest." The eggs need to stay warm in order to hatch. In a few weeks there is some activity in the eggs and the little ducklings begin to "break out of their shells." Peep, peep! They are cute little yellow things that look like they just went for a swim. After they are dry, they look very fuzzy and within a day they can leave the nest.
When they take a trip to the pond with their mother they can swim and they look for "juicy bugs" to eat. When the ducklings get tired the brood, or group, nestle up to their mother to sleep. At about four weeks of age they start getting feathers and shed that fuzzy look. You will also learn how they preen their feathers and what that means, why they waddle and what they are raised for. By the next year they will be raising their own broods!
Most little children enjoy any type of book that has ducks in it and are especially excited when they see them in person. This type of book is an excellent introduction to the science of domestic birds. On the left-hand page the dialogue is in line with the picture book format and the right-hand page is more scientific. For example, "The ducklings are full. It is nap time. The brood snuggles near its mother to sleep." On the other page it states, "A group of ducklings is called a brood." In the back of the book is a duck diagram, a glossary, some Fun Facts and an index. This is a perfect and popular little book that introduces the young child to the world of science! On the Duck Pond (Barnyard Buddies) Overview
