The Arrival (Pond Punkies, Book 1) ReviewThe Remarkable Adventures of Pond Punkies Book One: The Arrival by Lisa Riebe is a fun science fiction adventure for young readers. The story is focused on Blazedale (Blaze to his friends), a member of a race of four-inch-tall beings from the moons of Neptune. Each punkie has a natural talent -- fire manipulation, invisibility, shapeshifting, etc. Blaze and his friends discover that a school rival has embraced the Tritonan Clan's hatred of the other punkies and is part of a plan to destroy the other moons. A battle to save the clans takes place, with Earth as the setting.
The book offers a lot for its young audience to enjoy. There is adventure and action, humor, crazy sci-fi powers, and a mystery surrounding Blaze's missing father. A young human boy becomes the punkies' friend, giving kids a character to identify with. There are also valuable lessons about friendship, loyalty, and duty, though the book never comes across as preachy. There is real danger and at least one character dies but the story handles this maturely.
The book is written in relatively simple language. A few sci-fi-specific terms might require explanation but its target audience (kids around 7-11 years old) should have no problem following it. Though the style wouldn't appeal to older readers, parts of the story are pretty clever. I liked that the clans' powers relate to the names of their home moons (for example, the water-based clan comes from Naiad, named for the water-nymphs of Greek myth). I would have liked more explanation about the geyser that sends the punkies to Earth but that's me looking at the story through older eyes.
Overall, Pond Punkies: The Arrival seems like a great start to a fun children's series.
