Holiday Short Story Collection by Thoughts from the Pond ReviewPlot/Storylines/Character Development: 3 3/4
Prior to purchasing, I did not know that this was mainly a book for young children. With the exception of one story with a plot set in a wartime setting, all of these stories seemed to be aimed at trying to teach children some old Christmas morals, such as "It's better to give than to receive."
From an adult standpoint, the stories were trite, predictable, overdramatized efforts to pull at the heart strings. There is everything from little crippled girls to puppies to poor people giving their only presents away to the less fortunate. All of the poor people are wonderful, giving angels of society, where the rich people all learn the lessons of humility.
There is a novella at the end that is a `bonus', but I admit to skipping it after a couple of pages as it was a `children's book.'
If you have a young child to which you would like to impart more Christmas moral spirit, this would be a good book to read aloud to them. The stories are all very short and, with the one "war story" exception, appropriate for the six to eleven year old crowd. However, I would spread them out over a long period of time because, read straight through, they seem to give the impression that being poor is the only way to be happy in life and be a good person.
Writing Style: 4 Stars
Some of the stories show terrific talent at the short story format. The sentence structuring is wonderful in most. The dialogue, while necessarily saccharine, still rings true most of the time. The descriptions are excellent, giving just enough to keep the storyline intact.
Formatting/Editing: 4 1/2 Stars
There were a few editing errors, mostly punctuation issues in some of the stories, but others were perfect.
The formatting was of professional quality.
