WILDER PONDS an Adirondack Mystery ReviewIn Wilder Ponds, author Kirby White has combined an intriguing mystery with great characterization and some beautiful nature writing to create an impressively entertaining read.
Warren Crow is asked by his friend Raymond to help Raymond's friend Eleanor Wetherby decide the fate of four beautiful, undeveloped ponds on her large rural property in upstate New York. Eleanor's father Patrick had been in the midst of trying to decide whether they should be left wild or opened to limited development when he died in suspicious circumstances. Eleanor suspects that his death had something to do with that decision. Warren becomes heavily involved in the investigation of Patrick's death, the decision as to what's to be done with the property, and the lives of the whole Wetherby family--especially Eleanor's daughter Ronnie.
Kirby White's descriptions of the Wetherby property are wonderful. When Warren and Ronnie took a canoe trip to the ponds, I felt like I was right there gliding along with them, seeing the wildlife, getting wet and muddy on the long carries, setting up camp and making a bannock over the open fire. It soon becomes clear why the ponds' continuation as wilderness is so important to Ronnie.
The book is an excellent, clear-eyed exploration of the wilderness versus development debate that is always at issue in one wild place or another. There are family members on all sides of the question where the Wilder Ponds are concerned, which gives the author an opportunity to present the case for each of them. To his credit, the author (in the guise of Warren), though an environmentalist who is concerned about such things as development and global warming, gives a fair shake to all sides. He knows that global warming, for instance, will require such drastic measures to avert that he's not sure even he will be willing or able to go to the lengths required.
The mystery builds and unfolds rapidly towards the end. There is indeed foul play afoot. Once the details of murder are revealed, I wondered for a while if and when the police would be brought to bear on the case. It seemed almost as if the characters were going to take justice into their own hands and leave the authorities entirely out of it. I was relieved when that turned out not to be the case.
Wilder Ponds is a good story and the detailed examination of an important issue. I highly recommend it.WILDER PONDS an Adirondack Mystery Overview
