Guys Read: Funny Business ReviewJon Scieszka has written his share of kids' books, but this time out he edits this anthology of ten fun short stories (okay, actually, only nine stories, far as this advanced copy is concerned). The GUYS READ project is a fantastic initiative, dedicated to encouraging young boys to read. Scieszka's GUYS READ: FUNNY BUSINESS is the first in the series. Later volumes would carry the respective themes of Non-fiction, Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Mystery/Thriller, Sports, etc. But this one is titled FUNNY BUSINESS, and the theme obviously is humor. The tone of the stories herein range from droll to whimsical to just bizarre. You'll read about hapless mummies and murderous turkeys, stinky extraterrestrials and possibly the most painful wart ever, and so on. They're mostly worth checking out, but my pick of the pack would have to be the really excellent, very funny, and thought-provoking "Dear Lady Author" (co-written by the editor himself) and also "Will," Adam Rex's unconventional take on the superhero genre.
Some this and that on these ten stories:
- Mac Barnett's "Best of Friends" - Is getting a chance to jump into a vast, sumptuous pool of chocolate milk worth kissing up to the most annoying kid in school? Dean certainly thinks so. But, suddenly, so does every other kid in school.
- Adam Rex's "Will" - Will frets about how almost every kid in his school is special and getting super-powers or turning out to be a demi-god and such. But when a super-villain crashes thru the wall of his class room (never mind that the super-villain has on an actual Visitor's Badge), it's suddenly up to the powerless, totally ordinary Will to save the day.
- Eoin Colfer's "Artemis Begins" - Finally, the honest-to-gosh real origin of Artemis Fowl as Eoin Colfer spins a sort of maybe auto-biographical yarn from his childhood.
- "A Letter from Jon Scieszka Regarding Jeff Kinney" - This one features "zombies and mind-control and evil clowns and pretty unicorns," except that since writer Jeff Kinney was late with his story, all we get in this Uncorrected Proof (Not for Sale) edition is a bunch of blank pages. Which I think is funny.
- Kate Dicamillo & Jon Scieszka's "Dear Lady Author" - This story is hilarious and wise and hands down my favorite in this volume. Told thru a series of letters between a cheeky schoolboy and an author with a sense of humor, this laugh-out-loud correspondence demonstrates how reaching out to someone and making just a bit of effort can have life changing consequences.
- David Yoo's "A Fistful of Feathers" - His dad thinks Sam is a bit too girly and vows to make a man out of him. And when you factor in that Sam likes to play with dolls and watch weepy chick flicks, well, his burly dad may have a point. But, in what turns out to be a macabre twist, how exactly is a homicidal turkey supposed to man Sam up?
- David Lubar's "Kid Appeal" - In New Cairo, two friends try to come up with an idea to win a contest centering around the city's history. Too bad they can't keep their idea, er, under wraps.
- Christopher Paul Curtis's "What? You Think You Got It Rough?" - Can two kid brothers learn to co-exist with their grouchy, newly-moved in, 90-year-old gramps who keeps taking the switch to them and telling them how easy they have it nowadays? Maybe all it takes is patience and a ready ear.
- Paul Feig's "My Parents Give My Bedroom to a Biker" - One day when a boy forgets to take out the trash, he finds that his parents had given away his room to a big, smelly biker. And then the story gets really weird.
- Jack Gantos's "The Bloody Souvenir" demonstrates the worst way to remove a wart from your foot, and the horrible, horrible consequences thereof.Guys Read: Funny Business Overview
