Peter and Anneli's Journey to the Moon ReviewThis classic of early 20th century German children's literature is finally in English, first published as a stage play in 1912 then issued as a book in 1915. The plot centers on the journey to recover one of the severed legs from the moon of a certain violin playing june bug, Mr. Zoomzeman. His ancestors leg was offed by a thuggish woodman who was banished to the moon for all time by the Fairy of the Night. With the possibility of the leg being retrieved if Mr. Zoomzeman can find two good children who have never harmed an animal and are willing to join him on this journey to the moon. Enter Peter and Anneli.
Fantastic characters in an odd juxtaposed animistic and Christian universe come into play as characters in aiding the children and Mr. Zoomzeman in recovering the long missing leg. The nearest work in comparison to von Bassewitz's work is surely Maeterlinck's "The Blue Bird". My only serious complaint is the translation of the rhymes & songs in the book seem clunky and wooden in their English versions.
Though not a major addition to children's literature, it is a fun and memorable adventure that lingers with the reader both young & old.
Peter and Anneli's Journey to the Moon OverviewThis classic German children's tale of imaginative fantasy and adventure tells the story of how Peter and Anneli help Mr. Zoomzeman, a June bug, bring his leg back from the Moon. Long ago, a thief, stealing wood in the forest, had accidentally cut off Mr. Zoomzeman's great-great grandfather's leg and was banished to the Moon. Unfortunately, he took the leg with him and, since then, the family of the Zoomzemans have all had only five legs. Only two good children can get the leg back, so Mr. Zoomzeman, in search of goodness, finds Peter and Anneli.The three then set off together on an astonishing journey, filled with marvelous encounters, fantastic beings, and exciting events. Finally, reaching the Moon, they must challenge the ferocious Moon Man and, with the help of the Nature Forces, restore the missing leg to Mr. Zoomzeman.
