Head Hunters: The Making of Jazz's First Platinum Album (Jazz Perspectives) ReviewI would argue that M. Schlter has totally missed the point of this book. He suggests that it's a book about what genre this music is when in fact Pond spends his whole first chapter articulating that he's more interested in investigating musical process than genre naming. The whole point is that a name is limiting; Pond is trying to get at what it is that makes musicians interested in combining these myriad elements and what it might mean when they do it!
Though armed with a PhD and offering us an adapted version of his dissertation, Pond writes clearly and without unnecessary complexity (though he still seems to have outwitted the other reviewer here).
The book is not a biography of Hancock or a step by step view of the making of this album. It is an insightful look at the processes that drive music making and the musicians that do it, and it is written with the utmost respect for the musicians involved. In fact, central to Pond's thesis is the notion of both genre bending and market vs. art dynamics going on always already; he gives the musicians the agency and attempts to investigate the decisions behind their actions in a natural manner.Head Hunters: The Making of Jazz's First Platinum Album (Jazz Perspectives) Overview". . .
