Lakes and Ponds (The World We Live in) ReviewISBN 0816702071 - Printed in the United States of America. Age range not stated. Paperback, 30 pages. Published by Troll Associates in 1985. By Laurence Santrey, illustrated by Holly Moylan.
The various sorts of lakes, including ponds, are defined and how they were created is explained. From volcanic activity to glacial movement to sinkholes and more, the origins of different types of lakes and how they are replenished is told. The animals and plants that live in or near these lakes and ponds and their part in the food chain leads to an explanation of how man and man-made pollution and encroachment can disturb the food chain and destroy the lakes. A few specific lakes and events are detailed.
If you're a parent who thinks the world is six thousand years old, this book - which mentions that some lakes are millions of years old, among other things - will conflict with your beliefs. For normal people, this is an awesome little book. It's educational, for one thing, suitable for homeschooling or for school reports. The book is also great for parents who want to teach their kids to be as green as possible, because it explains the cost of NOT being environmentally aware. A nice Earth Day addition to the library! The illustrations range from peaceful, natural settings to cute images full of animal and people.
