FISHEYE - Rumble In the Pond ReviewAfter publishing my own book entitled "Fisheyes", it occurred to me that I'd never seen or heard of a book composed entirely of round, spherical pictures taken entirely with the extremely wide-angle fisheye lens. I'd acquired a used Nikon Fisheye lens in 1965 or 1966 and eagerly started exploring the possibilities of that most useful lens. It was often the only way to take pictures inside very cramped spaces like an astronaut's space capsule. After more than forty years of experimenting with the fine art potential of the fisheye lens, which produces a round image much like humans see with their own eyes but which normal photographic lenses capture only a tiny portion (usually a small rectangle or square area of the overall 180 degree view seen by our eyes), I decided to publish a sample of my experiments. Once published, I was curious to find out if I'd actually produced a book that was unique. I didn't remember any similar books, although many books had included an occasional round fisheye lens picture and they often made very dramatic cover photographs on a wide range of books. I didn't find any records of an entire book of fisheye photography as art, except for this British book published by something called the Lomographic Society International. I had no idea of what that meant and suspected from the rest of the title that it might have something to do with the scientific study of pond life?
I finally found a copy of this book and discovered it was a kind of lighthearted guidebook or instruction manual for "two wonderfully-Lomographic fisheye gadgets." The British or Russian (?) manufacturers seemed to be using "gadgets" as a synonymous term for inexpensive cameras? The guidebook is supposed to be a fun-filled introduction to playing with your new visual toys. " The 10 Golden Rules of Lomography" included rules such as: "Take your camera everywhere you go: Use it anytime, day or night: Don't think: Be fast: You don't have to know before hand what you captured on film: Afterwards, either: Don't worry about any rules: Shoot from the hip." Naturally this kind of advice resulted in a feeding frenzy of mindless snap, snap, snapping. The orgy of saturation exposures reminded me of the old saying that "a million monkeys typing on individual typewriters or computers would eventually recreate Shakespeare."
This camera manual's advice actually produced some really nice images such as the one on the book's cover (which is by far the most successful image in the collection). It does succeed in its goal of showing hundreds of snapshots from hundreds of different contributors. It's almost like a yearbook for users of the camera. It's also a blatant advertisement for the cameras that apparently succeeded. I was a little disappointed that I'd not published by own collection of "Fisheyes as Art" three years earlier so I would have beaten this fisheye collection into print. Oh well, I suppose I should be grateful that apparently no other Fisheye Photographic Collections were published over the four decades I was working on my own long-term project, because during that period there were certainly hundreds of outstanding samples of the fisheye lens's versatility published as individual images in various magazines and books.
This book is more of an advertising lark than anything else. The various cartoon characters of fish and gold fish bowls throughout the book fit right in with amusing nature of most of the snapshots included. It is a book of snapshots for amateur gadgeteers following the 10 Golden Rules and making snaps of anything that moved or didn't. My "Fisheyes" probably is the only published collection of serious attempts at exploring the limits of the Fisheye lens as art?FISHEYE - Rumble In the Pond Overview
